Entering Credit Card Numbers and Cell Format/Number limitations

If you wanted to create a custom format for a cell to hold a Credit Card Number and have it automatically add in the hyphens, Just forget it!

Microsoft uses the IEEE components and it conforms to a 15 digit limitation for numbers and since Credit Card Numbers have 16 digits, it won't work.

You can click in a cell that is formatted for text and type in the Credit Card Number with the hyphens and it will work fine.  That is because text can have up to 1,024 digits since there is no calculation involved.

To format a cell as text follow the following steps:

  1. Highlight the cells to format
  2. Choose Format, Cells on the menu bar
  3. Choose the Number tab at the top of the window
  4. Choose Text in the category list
  5. Choose the Ok Button
  6. You now may type in your text1
